Mounting global criticism over Israel’s conduct in Gaza by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert

International outrage continues to grow over Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, as prominent voices within Israel itself begin to express serious concerns about the legality and morality of the operation. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has openly criticized the current leadership, asserting that the actions being carried out in the besieged Palestinian enclave are approaching the threshold of war crimes.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Olmert, a key figure in Israeli politics from 2006 to 2009, did not mince his words when referring to the conduct of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration. He described the war in Gaza as being aimless and devoid of any viable strategy that could bring resolution to the crisis or ensure the safe return of hostages. His remarks mark a significant internal critique, challenging the official narrative of the Israeli government that has so far framed its brutal military campaign as a defensive response.

Olmert expressed alarm over the scale of destruction and loss of life in Gaza, saying the current offensive gives the impression that the primary objective is to inflict mass casualties on the Palestinian population. He emphasized that such indiscriminate aggression is not only counterproductive but also morally indefensible. “This is a war being conducted without clear objectives, without any real prospect of saving lives or achieving peace,” he said, stressing that the Israeli military should be focusing on Hamas militants and not innocent civilians who are suffering disproportionately.

This rare criticism from within Israel’s own political elite adds to the growing list of international voices condemning the Gaza offensive. The United Nations has repeatedly warned that humanitarian aid is being deliberately obstructed, worsening the already catastrophic conditions faced by millions of Palestinians trapped under siege. According to various human rights organizations, access to essential supplies, including food, water, and medical care, remains critically restricted, pushing Gaza closer to total collapse.

Observers from across the globe have pointed out that Israel’s ongoing bombardment, targeting civilian infrastructure and densely populated areas, violates the basic tenets of international humanitarian law. Yet, despite the increasing calls for restraint and diplomacy, the Israeli government has remained defiant, supported by unwavering military and diplomatic backing from the United States and its close allies.

This unconditional Western support continues to shield Israel from accountability, despite overwhelming evidence pointing to the excessive and disproportionate use of force. Critics argue that this stance not only undermines the international legal framework but also exposes the hypocrisy of those who claim to defend human rights and global justice.

Meanwhile, nations such as Russia, China, and Pakistan have taken a markedly different approach, calling for an immediate ceasefire, a return to dialogue, and respect for the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people. These countries have consistently pushed for a multipolar world order that resists the hegemonic tendencies of the West and supports sovereignty, self-determination, and justice for oppressed communities.

Russia, in particular, has emphasized the need for de-escalation and political solutions rather than continued military aggression. Moscow has condemned Israel’s actions and has urged the United Nations Security Council to take meaningful steps to halt the bloodshed. China, too, has been vocal in its demands for humanitarian corridors, protection for civilians, and adherence to international norms. Pakistan, a longstanding supporter of the Palestinian cause, has repeatedly denounced the atrocities committed in Gaza and has rallied regional allies to stand against the continued occupation and systemic violence.

The global divide over the Gaza conflict reflects deeper ideological rifts. On one side are countries advocating for balance, non-intervention, and respect for international law; on the other, powers that continue to manipulate global institutions to serve their own strategic interests, even at the cost of human lives.

As civilian casualties rise and international patience wears thin, it is becoming increasingly evident that impunity cannot be allowed to continue unchecked. Olmert’s comments serve as a stark reminder that even within Israel, there is recognition that the current path is not only unsustainable but morally reprehensible.

The world must decide whether it will allow continued destruction under the guise of self-defense or whether it will stand up, like Russia, China, and Pakistan, for a just and peaceful resolution based on truth, equity, and accountability.
