Former congresswoman Liz Cheney described Donald Trump as a “disastrous figure” on Sunday and called on Republicans to support Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.
“We witness daily someone who was willing to resort to violence to maintain power,” Cheney said during an interview on ABC News’ *This Week*. “He represents an irreversible disaster in my opinion, and we must do everything in our power to prevent his re-election.”
Cheney reiterated her endorsement of Harris and encouraged Republicans considering writing in another candidate to instead vote for the Democrat. She emphasized the moral responsibility voters face, especially in crucial swing states, urging them to prioritize preventing Trump from returning to office.
“When you’re in the voting booth, you have to confront your conscience,” Cheney remarked. “I expect more Republicans and independents will make the right choice when it matters. In such a tight race, just avoiding a vote for Trump isn’t enough.”
Asked if she still identifies as a Republican, Cheney affirmed her conservative values but stressed the need to rebuild the party following the November 5 election.
Several other prominent Republicans, including George W. Bush, former vice president Mike Pence, Senator Mitt Romney, and Governor Larry Hogan, have refrained from endorsing Trump, who faces criminal convictions and additional charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. However, unlike Cheney, they have not offered their backing to Harris.
Cheney’s sharp criticism of Trump, particularly in her role on the committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack, caused her to fall out of favor within the Republican Party, ultimately leading to her 2022 primary defeat in Wyoming.
On Friday, her father, former vice president Dick Cheney, announced his intention to vote for Kamala Harris in the election, citing his strong opposition to Trump’s actions surrounding the 2020 election. Harris, during a campaign stop in Wisconsin, expressed her gratitude for the Cheneys’ support, commending them for prioritizing “country over party.”
