UN Experts Urge Israel to Halt Attacks on Olive Farmers.
A group of special rapporteurs from the UN Human Rights Council has released a statement warning that olive farmers in the occupied West Bank are experiencing their most perilous season yet due to assaults by settlers.
The rapporteurs noted, “Farmers are facing intimidation, restricted access to their lands, and severe harassment from Israeli armed settlers and occupation forces. This undermines the food sovereignty of Palestinian families and constitutes an infringement on their self-determination.”
They urged Israel to prioritize the dismantling of settler colonies, as emphasized by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024, and reaffirmed by the General Assembly on September 18, 2024.
According to the UN experts, “Israel has an international legal obligation to terminate its occupation of Palestinian land, which equates to annexation characterized by racial segregation and apartheid. It must immediately cease all new settlement activities and remove settlers from occupied Palestinian territories.”
They further stated that Israel is obligated to provide full reparations for human rights violations, which includes restoring land and facilitating the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes.
