Iran’s Foreign Ministry criticized the recent calls from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom for restraint in relation to Israel, labeling them as “lacking in political logic” and inconsistent with international law. The comments were made on Tuesday, as reported by Reuters.
On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer released a joint statement supporting the efforts by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States to mediate an end to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The statement also emphasized the need for the release of hostages held by Hamas and the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid.
Furthermore, the European leaders urged Iran and its allies to avoid retaliatory actions that could heighten regional tensions, particularly in response to the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late July.
In a conversation with the British Prime Minister, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed that Tehran views retaliation against Israel for the July killing of Ismail Haniyeh as a legitimate right and a means to deter future aggression.
According to a report by the official IRNA news agency, President Pezeshkian stated that a retaliatory response to an aggressor is “a right of nations and a solution for stopping crimes and aggression.”
