EU Investigates Temu Over Sale of Illegal Products on Its Platform
International news section 04-11-2024
The European Union has launched an investigation into the Chinese e-commerce platform Temu, suspecting it of enabling the sale of illegal products in breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Temu, a rapidly growing site with around 100 million users in Europe, has drawn scrutiny for allegedly allowing previously banned sellers to relist prohibited items like counterfeit goods, pharmaceuticals, and toys.
Key concerns include the platform’s “addictive” design encouraging constant shopping and insufficient safeguards to protect consumers. The investigation follows complaints from several EU member states, and consumer advocates have supported the EU’s move, urging stronger marketplace oversight.
Temu has responded positively, pledging cooperation with EU regulators and outlining plans to sign a memorandum addressing counterfeit sales, while emphasizing its commitment to DSA compliance and consumer safety.
