CIESSM: In response to the statements made by the U.S. senator, we wish to clarify the following

  •
  • Tunisia is a sovereign nation, it’s not an American state for you or any external power else to dare deliver lectures to us.
  • Your latest comments represent a clear interference in our internal and domestic affairs and a desperate attempt to revive an outdated colonial discourse that has long been rejected with the fall of imperialism and your oppressive system.
  • Whoever speaks of democracy and human rights cannot credibly represent a country that has existed for only a few centuries while committing some of the most horrific crimes historic injustices that have scarred humanity.
  • Your state’s foundation is marked by a troubled history, shaped by violence and injustice inflicted upon Indigenous peoples and enslaved individuals. What legitimacy do you hold to lecture an ancient nation
  • whose legacy extends over thousands of years, boasting a culture and civilization that surpass in depth and richness any government you represent.
  • Our legacy is one of honor, resistance, and dignity in confronting “aggressors” like yourselves.
  • Tunisia, the land that founded Carthage and illuminated the Mediterranean with its civilization
  • does not seek approval  from a state whose history is defined by wars, invasions, and constant support for dictatorships across the globe.
  • We must remind you that America’s crimes in Iraq, Libya, and Vietnam have left an undeniable mark of shame. Your country’s record in the tragedies in Palestine and Gaza severely deprives your country and its institutions of any moral authority
  • on issues of freedom, democracy, or human rights. History itself will bear witness to these truths.
  • Your threat that “Putin and Iran will not save you” is nothing but weak and pathetic. Tunisia has never relied on external protection; It is the Tunisian people alone who safeguard their nation’s sovereignty and freedom. No foreign power will be permitted to dictate or impose its choices upon them.
  • Tunisia is far from the caricature you portray, as you claim; rather, it stands as a model of dignity. The real mockery lies in a representative of a colonial power speaking of human rights while their hands are stained with the blood of nations.

In conclusion let there be no doubt:

Tunisia is a free and independent nation, governed only by its own people. Its sovereignty is a red line that must not be crossed.
