Congresswoman expresses support for Canada and Mexico in face of Trump’s policies

Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett has openly expressed her support for Canada and Mexico as they push back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies. In a candid conversation on the Breakfast Club podcast, the Democratic congresswoman described it as “wild” that she now finds herself siding with foreign leaders against the sitting American president.

Crockett’s remarks followed a series of confrontations between Trump and the leaders of the U.S.’s two closest neighbors. Both Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have been vocal in their opposition to Trump’s actions, which they view as threats to their nations’ sovereignty.

One of the most contentious issues arose after the White House designated Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations, granting Trump the authority to order military strikes against them. In response, Sheinbaum firmly rejected any possibility of foreign military intervention in Mexico, stating, “This cannot be an opportunity to invade our sovereignty, whether by air, land, or sea.” She further emphasized that collaboration, not subordination, should define Mexico’s relationship with the U.S.

Meanwhile, tensions between Trump and Canada escalated following a seemingly unrelated incident in the world of sports. Trump made a call to a U.S. hockey team before they played in a tournament final against a Canadian squad. When the American team lost, Trudeau took the opportunity to push back against Trump’s past boasts about taking over Canada, posting on social media: “You can’t take our country, and you can’t take our game.”

Beyond military and political disputes, Trump’s administration has also threatened heavy trade tariffs against Canada and Mexico. His unilateral decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” has further fueled tensions, with Mexico strongly opposing the move. Sheinbaum even considered legal action against Google Maps when the platform adopted Trump’s renaming directive.

Crockett Criticizes Trump’s Supporters

Crockett did not hold back in her criticism of Trump and those who voted him back into office, despite his legal troubles. She pointed to his conviction in New York, where he was found guilty of 34 felony charges related to hush-money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

“Y’all knew who he was when y’all elected him, so don’t act surprised,” Crockett said, highlighting the irony of Trump’s political resurgence despite his criminal record. She contrasted his situation with her own, noting that while she has no criminal record, she would likely never be considered a viable presidential candidate in the eyes of many Americans.

Trump’s legal troubles extend beyond his New York conviction. He has also faced allegations of improperly handling classified government documents and played a central role in the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. However, his victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the most recent election shielded him from further prosecution in those cases.

Since taking office in early 2023, Crockett has positioned herself as a strong progressive voice in Congress. Earlier this year, she joined protests against Trump’s controversial “Department of Government Efficiency” (Doge), a newly created agency with access to federal financial systems handling trillions of dollars in transactions. Speaking at the demonstration, she vowed to resist Trump’s overreach, declaring, “We are not going to sit around while you go and desecrate our Constitution. We are going to be in your face and on your asses.”

Despite the passionate opposition from lawmakers like Crockett, many Democrats remain skeptical about Congress’s ability to counter Trump’s influence. A recent SurveyUSA poll of over 1,700 registered voters indicated that most Democrats lack confidence in their representatives to stand up to the president effectively.

An Unprecedented Political Landscape

Crockett’s public support for Canada and Mexico underscores the unprecedented nature of Trump’s presidency and its impact on international relations. While it is rare for a U.S. lawmaker to openly side with foreign governments against an American president, Crockett believes that Trudeau and Sheinbaum are standing up for democratic principles in a way that many U.S. officials are not.

As Trump continues to reshape U.S. foreign and domestic policies, his confrontations with Canada and Mexico are likely to persist. Meanwhile, progressive voices like Crockett’s will continue to challenge his leadership, even as many in Congress struggle to mount an effective opposition.
