6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near Taiwan

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off Taiwan’s eastern coast on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The quake struck at 5:06 p.m. local time at a depth of seven miles, with its epicenter located approximately 25 miles south of Yilan County’s administrative center on Taiwan’s northeastern coast. The island’s Central Weather Administration recorded the magnitude at 6.1.
The fire department indicated that no major damage had been reported at the time. However, the public was cautioned to remain vigilant about the risk of landslides in hilly areas.
The tremor was felt in Taipei, the capital. This recent quake occurred near the epicenter of a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake in April that resulted in 17 fatalities.
Over the years, Taiwan has significantly improved its earthquake preparedness in response to past destructive events.
